Humans have 6 senses, just like our animal friends (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste, and intuition/knowing). Animal communicators receive information intuitively. Below is a description of the many different ways in which anyone can practice and learn to receive intuitive information from animals. The following tidbits may be nice refreshers for those of you already well-versed in hearing from the animals and will give those of you new or still practicing some nice tips and tools for practice.

The following information was adapted from suggestions by author and Animal Communicator Marta Williams:

(Of her 3 books, I most enjoyed Marta Williams book “Ask Your Animals.” Suggestion to talk to your animals all the time about everything seems obvious now, but evolved all of my animal friend relationships. She also has a great approach for problem-solving with your animals detailed in her book. Basically, you tell your animal what you’re seeing, what you don’t prefer and why, what you would prefer instead and why, what ways you would like them to help out, and what’s in it for them. Julie)

Intuitive Communication – Modes of Reception

The modes of receiving information intuitively parallel our customary ways of receiving information: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and feeling.

When receiving intuitively the sensations of hearing and feeling are like phantom senses. They can be vague and fleeting – hard to pin down and hard to acknowledge.

The sense of knowing is unique to intuitive communication.

Clear Knowing (Claircognizance)

Knowing something is true without cues or other input. The knowledge comes very quickly. Can feel like you made it up. Can feel uncertain compared to other modes.

Clear Seeing (Clairvoyance)

Seeing pictures or scenes, in your mind. Easiest to do with your eyes closed.

Clear Hearing (Clairaudience)

Hearing words, phrases or whole sentences and paragraphs, mentally. This can sound and feel like you’re talking to yourself. Some people hear tones and accents.

Clear Feeling (Clairsentience)

Feeling the feelings another is experiencing, whether emotional or physical. If choose to feel in your body, let it flow through.

Clear Smelling (Clairallience)

Getting a virtual smell of something, like the smell of a wet dog while talking to a dog who is showing you he loves to swim.

Clear Tasting (Clairambience)

Getting a virtual taste of something, like the taste of apples while talking to a horse who is showing you she wants apples.

Signatures of Intuitive Communication

  • The information comes in quickly, sometimes even before you can ask or complete the question.
  • The information you receive is so odd that you think it must be wrong and you know you could not have made it up yourself.
  • You have an absolute, unshakable feeling of certainty about the information.

Techniques for Communicating Intuitively

Main Technique

Connecting with the Animal

The main technique is to establish an emotional and mental connection with the animal you wish to communicate with. First you can see the animal in person or get a picture or a description of the animal. Get a complete description, including common name (not registered name), age, sex, breed, color and markings. Once you have an image or sense of what the animal looks like, close your eyes and see or feel the animal in front of you, as if it were right there with you (regardless of how far away the animal may be). If you do not visualize well, focus on feeling the animal near you. If you visualize easily, focus on seeing and feeling it near you.

Now imagine an animal you love and fill your heart with the love you feel for that animal. Open your heart and imagine that feeling traveling to the heart of the animal you will be talking with. Say the animal’s name to yourself and introduce yourself. Explain what you are doing and why, and ask for the animal’s assistance in being clear and detailed. See if it feels ok with the animal to proceed.

In your mind’s eye, invite the animal to come in as close as is comfortable for both of you and if possible interact with the animal as if it were right there with you. Make this as real as you can. Feel it happening if you do not visualize easily. When you do this step you will likely get a lot of information about the animal’s personality which you should record once you ask your first question. Now you are ready to start communicating.

Summary of Steps for Connecting

  • Feel/see the animal there with you
  • Say the animal’s name (inside your head)
  • Open your heart send love
  • Explain who you are and what you are doing
  • Ask for the animals help, see if it feels ok to proceed
  • Invite the animal to come in as close as is comfortable
  • Interact with the animal as if you are there with it.
  • Begin communicating

When you are finished communicating, thank the animal for communicating with you and give it a compliment or two. Then come back to the same alert state you were in before you started the communication.

Additional Tips on Connecting

When you want to tune in to your own animals you can just send love and start communicating. You already have an established relationship with them so there is no need to go through all the connecting steps. You may close your eyes if you wish to focus better.

When you are out and about walking in the woods or at the dogpark and wish to talk to a wild animal you see or a dog you’ve just met, it is not practical to go through all the steps outlined above. Instead, just introduce yourself, send love, make sure it feels ok to proceed and then start your communication.

Techniques for Focusing: Some people have a hard time focusing. If you fall into that category you may want to try one or more of the techniques described in this section.

Relax – The best way to relax your body is through breathing. Just sit and focus on nothing but breathing for 5 minutes every day.

Get Grounded – Being grounded means being connected to the earth – having both feet on the ground. To do this I imagine I have an invisible, stretchy animal tail that goes through the floor and the ground all the way to center of the earth. I imagine that this tail stabilizes me while still allowing me to move about freely

Tap into Universal Knowledge – Tapping into your intuition connects you to a universal pool of knowledge. I think of this as a library that has a reference book for every question I might possibly ask. To access this library, I imagine extending my consciousness up out of my head toward universal consciousness somewhere above me. I like to see this as a shaft of light extending upward. If you do not visualize, just imagine the feeling of being connected to all the knowledge in the universe and having that vast resource at your fingertips.

Set Yourself Up for Success – Before you start, make an intention statement to yourself about how you want your practice to go. You could say, I get information quickly and easily and it is accurate and helpful.

Open to Intuitive Data – When you receive information intuitively, you can either directly request it from the animal, or ask for the information to come in to your intuition. To activate your intuition, imagine opening up to feel, hear, see, know, and sense intuitive impressions. Especially feel your third eye opening right in the middle of your forehead.

Exercise 1: Scoping an Animal as Practice

Study the photograph of an animal that a friend, colleague, neighbor etc. has detailed information about, but one you don’t know.

Record ANY and ALL impressions you get as you look at the picture and focus on the animal.

Connect with/tune into the animal

Now ask the animal:

1. What are your likes and dislikes?

2. What do people always say about you?

3. Tell me who else you live with and how you feel about them.

4. Has anything changed recently in your life?

5. Is there anything you are worried about?

6. Do you have a question for me or for your person?

Developing Your Intuition

To develop your intuition in every day life, one good read is Sonia Choquette’s book Trust Your Vibes. She recommends spending some time every day doing deep breathing, relaxing and tuning in to your hunches and hits.

Key Technique for Receiving Intuitively

The most important technique for intuitive communication is simply this:

Be absolutely alert and attentive to every single impression you are receiving and without any judgment or qualification, record it.

This is a lot harder than it sounds! But this is the key to being successful at this skill. So no matter what you get, for example, that a dog likes grapefruit or a cat flies in planes or a horse has a kitten for its baby, no matter what, your job is solely to write it down. Do not fix the information you get, do not qualify it, do not alter it. Try to record things exactly as they come in to you, with all the ambiguity and nuance. That’s when you will start to see magic happen.

Interact In Your Imagination

If you are having trouble connecting with an animal, try imagining that you are actually there with the animal. Imagine calling the animal to you or approaching it – if the animal wants this. Then imagine interacting, throwing a ball, giving a treat or patting the animal. See what happens and see what you feel about the animal. Open your heart and send love, let the animal see that you can be trusted. You may notice that you can discover a lot about an animal’s personality in the process.

Go Back to the Source

If you get information that is confusing or vague you can go back to the animal and ask for help. Ask the animal to send the information a different way or send more explanation. Explain your dilemma and ask them to help you out of it.

TIP FROM AMELIA KINKADE, author of “The Language of Miracles”:

(I loved this book. Some theories about physics of remote communication. A ton of fun stories. Great for those interested in ideas for improving your ability to be a better leader to and partner with your animals. Julie)

Psychic Sandwich Technique

  1. In your mind show them and tell them what you want, send positive feelings
  2. Show them a picture of what you do not want and say “no”
  3. Show them another picture of what you want and send positive feelings

FROM PENELOPE SMITH: “Animal Talk: Interspecies Telepathic Communication” Penelope Smith 1982

(I loved this book as well. Short. Covers the basics with an eye to respect and compassion. Julie)

Rather than thinking of animals and people as “them” and “us,” I see all of earth’s life forms, including plants, rocks, water, air, and all we experience around us, as a symbiotic whole. We are working in concert, unfolding a cycle that we have been developing over a millennia, a continual play to act in, observe, and unravel toward more enjoyment of life and exchange with each other. The harmony is unbalanced when cruelty, misuse, and misunderstanding replace communication, as has often happened in humanity’s relationship with the rest of the animal kingdom, to the detriment of all of us in the long run.

Humans and non-human animals have in common that they are a combination of body and spirit-biological forms animated by spiritual beings or essences.

All beings have the inborn ability to communicate with and understand each other. All or most children can experience mental or telepathic communication with others of any species. It’s the main way, along with physical gesture, that they communicate before they learn language.

However, when children learn to speak, they tend to inhibit their ability to communicate directly through thought, since the speaking ability is the most validated and encouraged by adults and gets the most attention. So the telepathic ability begins to fade, as any function can when it is not used. In addition, others, such as parents or peers may invalidate or make fun of telepathy.

Penelope trained and worked first as a human counselor, then her ability to communicate with animals took on a new dimension. Besides being able to talk and listen to animals, I now had tools to help them. I found that the same techniques which I had learned that helped people release past traumas, relieve emotional upsets, and handle problems and mental blocks, helped animals also.

The more you respect animal’s intelligence, talk to them conversationally, include them in your life, and regard them as friends, the more intelligent and warm responses you’ll usually get. Beings of all kinds tend to flower when they are showered with warmth and understanding from others.

Ensure each of your animal friends has, knows and fulfills a purpose:

They will feel happier, more responsive, and responsible. Talk it over with your animal friends and establish what purposes or jobs they can fulfill in relation to you. For example, ask your turtle to look after the apartment by radiating her brightness and warm presence there. Ask your Siamese to help keep the place clean and cheerful, your Shepherd to watch the kids while they play in the yard, etc. Other examples include: keeping you happy, cheering you up when you’re down, entertaining the family with antics, creating warmth around the house so all feel welcome, adding beauty to the environment with their physical appearance, mannerisms, song, or purr, guarding property, creating a feeling of safety so that no negative influences can enter, getting you out to exercise, keeping you calm and soothing tensions, expanding your viewpoints about life, sharing or enhancing an activity you enjoy, like running, swimming, Frisbee competition, equestrian skills, etc.

Example Anna the horse helped a woman regain her confidence with horses. Horses are doing this for me right now in my life.

Penelope said she had a similar experience with a reputedly high-strung horse in one of her first times in the saddle. She told the horse she was green and would appreciate gentle treatment. While she was riding, the instructor was amazed when the horse obeyed Penelope’s wishes to slow down over the instructor’s directions to speed up.

When an animal’s job or purpose is firmly recognized, validated, and established, near miraculous cooperation and joy can appear.

Animals as Teachers and Guides in My Process of Awakening

Since becoming conscious of what I call my awakening, I realized that animals are not only amazing, wonderful and uplifting companions and teachers, but all of nature acts as my mirror and thus a teacher for me in remembering my true essence/spirit/soul/divine self.

When doing animal communication readings, I generally receive information from the animal that is as related to their human guardian as to the animal themselves. Sessions therefore often include insights for the owners regarding their own areas of challenge or growth along with practical information about how the challenge is showing up or manifesting in the animal’s physical, emotional, or mental body. Feels fun and natural for me to tend to receive emotional information and then to blend it as a human, animal therapist, teacher, communicator, and uplifter.

In recent years, I have enjoyed several books, cds, and workshop recordings by Esther and Jerry Hicks on the teachings of Abraham. Many spiritual guides and masters, such as Abraham, assert that humans, animals, and all of creation are linked and that animals are not victims and do not see themselves as such, they experience themselves as experiencers. While they have feelings, opinions, and preferences, they seem to naturally be free of judgment. Below is one quote related to this idea that I found of interest. (A few more quotes follow in the book if you wish to read more.)

From “The Vortex” Esther and Jerry Hicks

“The most important thing to remember about the animals with whom you share your planet is that they have come into this environment as extensions of Source Energy just as you have. In other words, like you, your animals also have an Inner Being or Source point of view; and, like humans, when their physical point of view varies from their Source point of view, they can also be in a state of resistance. However, the animals of your planet are less often in a state of resistance or separation. Unlike humans, they primarily remain in a state of Connection or alignment with their Broader Perspective.”

“When humans witness an animal who is tuned in to the Vibration of its Broader Perspective, they often comment about the “instinct,” we call an animal’s “state of alignment with Broader Perspective.”

“Evidence of the alignment of the physical animal with its Broader Non-Physical counterpart is all around you, and so you accept it as animal behavior or “instinct,” when what you are actually witnessing is a physical animal who, because it is offering no resistance, has full access to the Broader Perspective, and who understands, always, the larger picture.”

With love, Julie
